The DiaBEATes Week challenge

7 days to challenge these shocking statistics

  • 2.75 million people in the UK now have diabetes
  • Around 2 million people have Type 2 diabetes - a condition strongly linked to obesity
  • This figure is predicted to rise to 4 million by 2025
  • An increasing number of younger people and even children are being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
  • 8 out of 10 diabetics are at risk of heart disease or stroke
  • Complications due to diabetes include amputation, heart disease, kidney failure and blindness

7 days to challenge the financial resources currently devoted to this condition

  • Diabetes costs the National Health Service £1 million per hour…and rising!
  • Approximately 10% of the NHS budget each year is spent on diabetes –a figure in excess of £9 billion

Clinical evidence that small lifestyle changes can make a big difference

A large-scale study in 3,234 overweight adults with pre-diabetes demonstrated that by losing a modest amount of weight patients reduced their risk of developing diabetes by 58%. In patients aged 60 and above an even greater reduction in risk of 71% was seen.1
